and we're off...

so its probably about time i start doing this. i spend enough time reading what other people have to say and fancy myself a competent enough writer that i should just as well give this a go.

the thing that really sparked my decision to write this was an article i saw on the plain dealer's site about the death of marilyn chambers. the headline referred to her as an "x-rated star" and apparently she was in some of the first modern porn films. somewhere in the comments below the article and gjmiller11 closed out his/her feeling with this line...

"Yep, AP, you have once again profiled a perfect role model for all of our children to emulate: dead at age 56; known for being a whore who also acted. I feel very sorry for her and for anyone who falls into that exploited lifestyle. Her chosen way of life should have been mourned, not celebrated."

its setiments like this which have pushed me into the blogoshpere, to give myself an outlet at the frustration stirred up by gjmiller11. allow me first to make a couple of assumptions about the said commenter, first, ill assume that he, unlike the late ms. chambers, is an upstanding, god fearing man with strong midwestern values, and be that the case, paired with his ability to register a free username on an online newpaper, is free to say whatever he wants in response this woman's obituary. it's what the founding fathers would have wanted. freedom is at the heart of everything american, and freedom of speech is at the core of that principle. its why religious zealots risked life and limb to come start a new life from scratch, the opportunity to the flee the persecutory ways of old europe. somehow mr miller has understood this right to mean he can use the premature death of this woman to denigrate the decisions she made in her life time, and the internet serves as the perfect medium for this to occur. aint america great. well mr miller, should the tasks of your life be notable enough for the associated press to assign a reporter to the task of quantifying your years into a few hundred words, im sure people will have nothing but wonderful things to say about the wholesome life you lead, and the judgement will be left to your god and not a bunch of "registered users" on the internet.

in other news, shortly after reading about ms. chambers, i picked up the dead tree version of the columbus dispatch and saw this headline, "obama promises to get tough with pirates."

we overwhelmingly elected a black man as president, and he's taking on the plight of piracy, and not the "college kids stealing kanye albums from their dorm room" kind. wouldnt our founding fathers just be so proud.
